After MBBS, now BDS seats enhanced by 26%

JAMMU: After a long delay and repeated requests by the state government, the Dental Council of India (DCI) has enhanced BDS seats for Dental Colleges of Jammu and Kashmir by 26% i.e 13 each for Jammu Dental College and Srinagar Dental College, reliable sources informed.
“An official communication regarding enhancement of 13 BDS seats for Jammu Dental College and the Srinagar Dental College from the existing 50 seats each has been received,” official sources informed The News Now.
After request from the state government regarding enhancement of BDS seats, the team of Dental Council of India (DCI) visited both Dental Colleges of Jammu and Kashmir i.e Jammu Dental College and Srinagar Dental College a few times to take stock of the faculty strength, student-teacher ratio, infrastructure besides assessing other criteria required for sanctioning additional seats.
Both Government Dental Colleges in Jammu and Kashmir i.e Jammu Dental College and Srinagar Dental College had 50 BDS seats each.
The state government had requested the Dental Council of India (DCI) to enhance the BDS seats by at least 10% to accommodate candidates from Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) under the Government of India’s 10 percent reservation scheme for the Economically Weaker Sections, sources said.
With enhancement of seats, both Dental Colleges of the state will now have 63 BDS seats each. The enhancement in BDS seats will also be reflected in the number of MDS seats which is very good news for the aspiring Dental Surgeons.
It may be mentioned that Medical Council of India (MCI) had recently sanctioned 30 additional MBBS seats each for Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu, and Srinagar Medical College, while 25 MBBS seats were enhanced for SKIMS.
The enhancement in MBBS seats was made to accommodate candidates of Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) under the Government of India’s 10 percent reservation scheme.
