JAMMU: After much hue and cry from the Corporators about non-availability of funds and resentment from the general public regarding lack of development, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), which was formed in October 2018, 10 months back, has decided to allot Rs 20 lakh to each ward falling within its jurisdiction for undertaking various development and beautification works.

“The proposal has been finalized and the announcement regarding allotment of Rs 20 lakh funds for each ward of the Jammu Municipal Corporation will be made in the General House meeting of the Corporation which will be held on July 17,” official sources informed The News Now.

Sources informed that Government of India has decided to provide funds amounting to Rs 120 crore annually to Jammu Municipal Corporation in three quarters i.e Rs 40 crore after every three months subject to submission of Utilisation Certificates (UCs).

“We receive funds of around Rs 40 crore from central government every 3 months and allotment has to be made in accordance with the availability of funds,” Mayor, Jammu Municipal Corporation, Chander Mohan Gupta told the News Now, while adding, “Therefore, it has been decided that each Corporator will be provided Rs 20 lakh each for undertaking development works in his ward”.

The new instalment of funds for the JMC has been released by the Government of India, he said.

The Mayor said that JMC, since its formation in October last year, has so far received funds of around Rs 27 crore from the central government for undertaking development works. The funds were stalled due to imposition of Model Code of Conduct (MCC), he said.

It may be mentioned that the JMC, in its earlier General House meeting, had asked the Corporators to submit plan of development works of their respective wards not exceeding Rs 10 lakh.

Sources informed that those works are yet to be undertaken in some wards, and, in the wards where the works have been started, they are yet to be completed.

There are 75 wards falling within JMC limits.
