JAMMU: The State High Court on Friday denied the bail application of a truck driver for mowing down an on-duty cop on a checkpoint in 2017.
On 14 January 2017, Mohd Maqbool Dar of Kupwara was driving a truck JK09A-5301 loaded with vegetables along with the owner Reyaz Ahmed of Bandipora. He was stopped at Naka point at Jakheni in Udhampur by the cops manning the checkpoint as the movement of heavy vehicles was suspended on Jammu Srinagar National Highway.
“The driver when told that he cannot be allowed to proceed ahead to Srinagar, he lost his temper and insisted that he will go to Srinagar come what may and in case any police official on duty dared to stop him he would crush him under the truck,” the chargesheet said.
“The accused driver abruptly started the vehicle and dashed against the barricade put up by the naka party at the naka point where Selection Grade Constable Sanjeev Kumar was stationed to stop the speeding and defiant drivers, as a result of which the truck crushed Kumar leading to his death on spot,” it said.
On this, Justice Sanjay Kumar Gupta of Jammu and Kashmir High Court rejected the bail application of driver Dar.
