JAMMU: The state government has failed to curb menace of air pollution contributed by vehicle emissions in Jammu and Kashmir despite the reports that the pollution checking centers are not adhering to the prescribed norms.

“The government has failed to curb vehicles contribute in air pollution due to lack of coordination between departments. The old vehicles are continuously contributing in air pollution but concerned department has no concrete solution for the problem,” an official said.

The Jammu and Kashmir Pollution Control Board (JKPCB) monitors the levels of air pollution while Jammu and Kashmir Motor Vehicle Department (JKMVD) monitors the regulation of vehicle pollution checking centers and traffic police check certificates issued by pollution checking centers,” an official source said.

“There is no proper mechanism to check and stop the vehicles, which contribute in air pollution,” he said.

“Such vehicles are continuously contributing in the air pollution as the pollution checking centers issue fake certificate by feeding manual reading while these violators are also not noticed by traffic police,” he said.

“We check these pollution checking centers but it comes under the transport department. We have conducted some inspection drives last year and informed the transport department. We will raise the issue again in meeting with principal secretary on 12th June,” JKPCB chairman Ravi Kumar Kesar said.

“Transport commissioner has constituted a committee comprising member of pollution board and transport department to monitor these pollution checking centers,” Road Transport Officer (RTO), Jammu, Dhananter Singh said.

He added that more information will be available with transport commissioner. However, despite repeated calls to the transport commissioner did not respond to the calls.

The Jammu and Kashmir has a total of 75 pollution checking centers. Out of total 42 centres, 37 have been opened in Jammu, 3 in Kathua and 2 in Udhampur while 33 such centres opened in Kashmir province and 4 in Ladakh.
