Jawan killed, 7 hurt in blast at LoC training

JAMMU: An Army soldier was killed and seven others were injured in a blast during a "training activity" along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district on Wednesday.
The incident took place when soldiers were carrying out drill with live ammunition on a forward post as part of Mission Readiness Training, official sources said.
"On Wednesday at 0915 hours, during a training activity on a military post in Mendhar sector, one soldier was critically injured and later succumbed to injuries", Defence Public Relation Officer Lieutenant Colonel Devender Anand said.
The martyr jawan has been identified as 34-year-old Naik Shreeshailappa Balabatti (2614862N), a resident of Bagalkot District in Karnataka.
“Seven others suffered minor injuries and two of them were taken to the nearest military hospital. Their condition is stable,” the officials said.
The incident took place at the Dhera Dabsi forward post of the 12 Madras Regiment, they said.
“Training was being carried out by a qualified instructor, however accidently the live grenade got actuated and resulted in grevious injuries to instructor,” sources informed.
“Detailed investigation of the incident is underway so as to take corrective measures,” a defence official said, adding that while incident is unfortunate, training with live ammunition is the risk soldiers take.
