Srinagar, Jan 3: Panic gripped Pulwama town in south Kashmir when a guard of police station opened fire after noticing some suspicious movement on late Tuesday night, official sources said.

They said a sentry on the main gate of police station, Pulwama, noticed some suspicious movement late last night. The sentry fired several rounds in the air, they said, adding police personnel inside the police station immediately rushed out of their rooms after hearing the firing.

Later, a search operation was launched in the area but nothing was found, they added.

“Alert sentry opened fire noticing suspicious movement near police station Pulwama. No loss. Information is preliminary in nature,” Deputy Inspector General, south Kashmir range, S P Vaid said in a tweet after the incident, which took place three days after five CRPF personnel martyred and a group of three Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militants stormed into their camp in Pulwama on Sunday. All the three militants were also killed in the 36-hour long encounter.
