Srinagar, Jan 2: Months after SMHS Hospital started corneal transplant, ten people have registered themselves as donors of cornea, while 60 transplants have already taken place at the hospital giving new lease of vision to the blind.
Four months since Bilqees, a 25 year old Srinagar woman became the first person to register as an eye donors in Kashmir; seven more people have come forward and pledged to donate their eyes.

An official from SMHS Hospital said that the registration process for the seven donors was underway. “We are very enthused by the response of people in Kashmir towards eye donation. It will go a long way in establishing a full-fledged eye transplant facility here,” the official said.
Meanwhile, at least 60 people have received corneal transplant at the hospital since July 2017, when the procedure was started. The eye transplants, as per SMHS Hospital officials, are carried out using the corneas supplied by eye bank association of India. “All the transplants that we carried out here were using the donated cornea sourced from eye bank association. Till date, we do not have a cornea sourced from Kashmir,” the SMHS Hospital official said.
