Strong govt policy required on educating youth for future: Study

New Delhi, Dec 31 : A strong and effectively implemented government policy on educating for the future was needed for economies to prepare youth with skills for tomorrow, according to a study.
The research says that small and rich countries do better while preparing youths for tomorrow.
The study conducted by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), 'Worldwide Educating For The Future Index (WEFI)' measures the effectiveness of countries in preparing students for future demands of work and life.
It covers 35 countries in the developed and developing world, representing 77 per cent of global population and 88 per cent of GDP.
New Zealand topped the list and India ranked 29th. The US stood at 12th position and China at 31st.
The study concluded that for economies to prepare youth with skills for tomorrow, countries need a strong and effectively implemented government policy on educating for the future.
Curriculum such as project-based learning combined with assessment frameworks to test skills; Well-paid, quality teachers with training in teaching future skills; Availability of career counselling, project-based learning and collaboration beyond classrooms; Vibrant civil society and
awareness of global citizen values were the components required for skill development of the youth.
Most countries do not have the right policy, teaching and socio-economic environment to prepare youth with skills for the future, says the study.
Assessment of country-level of preparedness of preparing youth with skills for tomorrow was made in the study instead of traditional skills such as mathematics, science and literacy.
The WEFI measured Policy environment (30 pc), Teaching environment(50 pc) and Socio-economic environment(20pc).
The study is based on 16 indicators and 24 sub-indicators in three categories. Indicators are a mixture of quantitative data and qualitative scores by EIU analysts and based on interviews with over 70 education policy experts, detailed background research and third-party data.
