Seven cases related to Tablighi Jamaat event

SRINAGAR: Sixteen more persons tested positive for COVID-19 in Kashmir on Monday evening, highest in a single-day, taking the tally of infected persons in the Valley to 73, even as the authorities fear the numbers to further mount up in the days to come.
Of the sixteen new cases, six are residents of Kupwara, four from Bandipora, three from Baramulla, two from Shopian and one from Pulwama.
Director National Health Mission, Jammu and Kashmir Bhupinder Kumar said, “The patients that were reported positive today had a travel history and had come in contact with earlier confirmed positive cases.”
70 out of the total 73 cases in Kashmir are active, as one of them has recovered while two others died, he added. A district-wise break up shows that maximum 27 cases of the total 73 are reported from Srinagar, followed by Bandipora with 16 cases, Budgam 8, Baramulla 8, Kupwara 6, Shopian 5 and Pulwama 3.
Eight among the 16 new patients are admitted to Government Medical College Baramulla, five in SKIMS Soura and three to Chest Disease Hospital.
The six persons from Kupwara include a 66-year-old man, his 56-year-old wife and their 27-year-old son—all residents of Heeri area of the frontier district. They along with two others—52-year-old woman from Magam Handwara and 55-year-old woman from Chogul Handwara—had returned from Bangladesh and stayed at Nizamuddin Markaz in New Delhi before returning to Valley recently.
The sixth case is a 62-year-old resident of Tangdhar who had returned from Bhopal and also stayed at Nizamuddin Markaz for around a week before returning home on March 16. All his primary contacts, 11 of them, have been also quarantined.
“All of them have history of stay at Markaz Nizamuddin Delhi. All of these were already under quarantine but as per protocol, contact tracing is being carried out on a war footing,” Deputy Commissioner Kupwara Anshul Garg said.
The four cases from Bandipora include 48-year-old and 42-year-old men who had travelled to Jammu and participated in a religious function while two others—30-year-old man and 15-year-old teen are contacts of previous COVID-19 patients.
Regarding Baramulla cases, the sources said that they are relatives of the COVID-19 teacher whose father died of the disease recently. The trio includes teacher’s wife, their 8-year-old daughter and a 25-year-old relative of the deceased.
A senior officer of district administration Shopian informed that a couple who had returned from Saudi Arabia on March 16 tested positive and their samples test reports were received from CD hospital.
Regarding man from south Kashmir whose test report came positive at CD hospital, sources said he is a resident Sangarwani area of Pulwama and had come in contact with a COVID-19 patient, a Tablighi Jamaat member.
Meanwhile, the test sample of seven confirmed cases for Covid-19 have come negative who were admitted at Chest Disease Hospital Srinagar. “More good news, 7 positive patients turned negative as another sample to be taken as quarantine period will be discharged together we can do it break the chain,” HOD CD Hospital Dr. Naveed Shah said.
